2008 CURISA and CGITA GIS in the Carolinas Conference

The conference will have different format this year. Sunday will be for early arrivals and networking opportunities including two mini-workshops, a social and other non-sponsored events. Monday will consist of your choice of two half day workshops that are included in the cost of registration. Tuesday will offer multi-tracked presentation sessions for you to pick and choose as you see fit. The presentations that make up each track are an assortment of fellow members, trusted vendors, and newcomers to the industry that have something to share. Also, make sure to stick around for the whole conference, we have some great door prizes to give away (registration is your entry, but you must be present to win). All efforts have been taken to organize the conference so that all attendees can make the most of their time in Concord and we hope that your experience is a rewarding one.

Trees for an Urban Future

2008 North Carolina Urban Forestry Conference

Emerging Issues, Innovations, and Current Trends

Conference Context and Objectives:
Recently, North Carolina was determined to be the 6th fastest growing state in the nation. With the positive aspects of this status, comes an urgency to increase awareness of how to plan for, and with, our urban forests. This conference is designed to cover environmental, planning and educational issues, as well as technical tools and resources, needed to assure urban forest quality throughout North Carolina.

Conference Planners:
The conference is being organized through the joint efforts of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the NC Urban Forest Council. The conference planning committee includes members from NC Division of Forest Resources, NC State University Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and Department of Horticulture Science, City of Greensboro, City of Raleigh, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, NC Project Learning Tree, Arborgard, City of Salisbury, and University of North Carolina School of Goverment.

Introduction to ArcGIS I (version 9.2)

ArcGIS Desktop is ESRI's full-featured GIS software for visualizing, creating, managing, and analyzing geographic data. This course provides the foundation for becoming a successful ArcGIS Desktop user. Students learn fundamental GIS concepts and become familiar with the range of functionality available in the software. In course exercises, they work with ArcGIS Desktop and see how it provides a complete GIS software solution.

Note: This course has been submitted to the American Planning Association for approval as an AICP Certified Maintenance event for 16 CM hours.

This course counts as credit toward getting or mainting the GISP certification from the GIS Certification Institute.

ArcGIS software offers many tools for visualizing, creating, managing, and analyzing geographic data. In this course, students extend their ArcGIS skills in the areas of cartography, data automation and editing, and geoprocessing and spatial analysis. Students work with advanced cartographic tools as they learn how to efficiently create effective maps. A major focus of the course is the geodatabase. Students learn database design considerations and techniques for creating, maintaining, and managing GIS data stored in a geodatabase. The ArcGIS geoprocessing tools for spatial analysis are also covered and, in a course project, students apply many of their newly acquired skills.

Note: This course counts as credit toward getting or mainting the GISP certification from the GIS Certification Institute.
